Losing their religion

Interesting leader column in today’s El País urging the government to lay down what should be taught as an alternative to religion for Spanish schoolchildren not wishing to take this subject.

Wrangling between church representatives and the government is ongoing, with one option being to leave it up to individual schools how to deal with it. This could lead to schools sticking the extra study period at the beginning or end of the day, providing what could well amount to a government-encouraged ‘bunk’.

With the church having aligned itself strongly with the right extreme of the opposition PP, the socialist government may decide that it has little to lose by upsetting the religious authorities. And if the extra hour is put to good use and standards are raised in, say, maths as a result, the electoral damage would be minimal.

It’s nice to see El País sticking its neck out a bit as well when it comes to government policy, though criticisms of approved policy in addition to gentle nudges in the right direction would also go down nicely.
