Owing it all to Artur

Artur Mas, leader of the centre-right-nationalist CiU formation, has been putting it about that Andalusian-born José Montilla, the socialist hopeful in Wednesday’s regional Catalan elections, owes the fact that he’s able to stand as a candidate to CiU’s integration-of-outsiders policy during the party’s 23-year reign over what the formation sees as its rightful feud.

Ahem, Artur, would this be the same CiU that commissioned reports on media activities which aimed to dig out any potential enemies of nationalism (read anti-Catalan outsiders) and which criticised local radio presenters for speaking Spanish while off air? The same integration-crazy CiU whose reports looked to discredit anyone who veered from the nationalist line, even criticising a TV presenter’s incorrect pronunciation of the ese sonora (a sure sign that one is not a true son of the soil)? The same CiU that reserved the Creu de Sant Jordi almost exclusively for people with Catalan surnames?

Artur, ja se’t veu el llautó.

  1. Hmm interesteing that the overt racism shown by CiU (Artur – a hint: those who are really inclusive and colour/origin-blind don’t go on about their non-racist credentials or the origins of their opponents at every opportunity… it’s a bit of a give away) – has barely made the news here. The other day, it was made clear that Catalonia has enogh muslims now, thankyou very much, and this attack on Montilla is a pure grab for the racist vote. And somehow people like this bunch more than Esquerra? I don’t think there’s much space between them, myself.

  2. Montilla managed to get in there before the points system has been introduced – I don’t think the Mas integration method would let many more through.
